GOD WILL GIVE YOU THE DESIRES OF YOUR HEART

Ever since I discovered Psalm 37:4 I mastered it, rehearsed it and prayed it with such a fervency that would put world cup fans to shame. Most of the times I used this verse to coax God into giving me what I wanted up until lately when why I got to understand the true revelation behind the verse.
Whenever I read the verse I understood it to mean whatever my heart wanted God had promised to give. The literal sense of it. Isn’t He a promise keeper? Hasn’t He promised to watch that His word is performed? But despite rehearsing it in prayer I found myself with ‘unanswered’ prayers. If you’re reading the Bible literally you will miss out on a lot that God actually wants to communicate. The Bible is not a literal book. You could know a verse and fail to understand the revelation behind it.
But sometime back as I was meditating on the verse, declaring it for the one millionth time over my life I got a different revelation. In fact I finally got the revelation. The verse was not a promise to grant me the desires of my heart but a promise that if I delighted myself in the Lord He would give me the desires of His heart. God was promising to give me what to desire and it is the desires that He grants that He will honour. God is not a magician with a wand waiting for me to state my wishes so that He can grant them.
Our hearts are desperately wicked. I cannot even begin to imagine the amount of evil thoughts I have had since birth and to think God would honour misconceived desires is to lie to ourselves.
Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Selah.
Now God giving you the desires of your heart is a conditional promise; that you first delight yourself in Him. Again, our hearts are desperately wicked. It is only at the place of delighting ourselves in the Lord where He can change our desires and align them with His. The truth is that the answer to some prayers is NO. God is promising only to honour the desires of those who delight themselves in Him. Those who have surrendered their will for His, their desires for His. It is only at the place of delighting and surrender that God will reveal His purpose and His will for your life for you to own and accomplish with Him.
Life changed for Hannah the day her desires aligned with what was God’s will. Hannah desperately wanted a baby. God desperately wanted a prophet to fill into Eli’s shoes. Year after year she prayed for a son and the more time passed, the more desperate she became. In fact the Bible says that she one day told Elkanah, “Give me a son or I die.”
But one day when in the temple, at the very end of herself she prayed, “God if you give me a son, I will give him back to You to serve You.” That was the prayer that God answered.
Just like Hannah, sometimes God wants what we want just that He may want our hearts to be in a different place. If you truly want God to reveal His purpose and direction you have to delight yourself in Him. It all begins at the place of surrender. Be willing to let go of your own desires, the castles you’ve built, some journey you might have started that doesn’t align with God’s direction.
Why do I say surrender your will first? Because that is where God begins. We say to God, show me first and I will go. But God says go first and I will show you.
There is absolutely no loss in God’s kingdom. Whatever you give or lose in pursuit of Him, He will give back pressed down shaken together and running over.
Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Selah.
